St Hilda's

It’s the people who make Tolcarne an amazing boarding hostel

Our team of staff are warm, approachable, and care deeply for all of the students at Tolcarne.

Who we are:

Robyn McGarry and Ziggy Hill are our Co-Directors of Boarding. Together, they oversee the operations of the hostel and play a big part in day to day activities at Tolcarne.

They work closely with the girls, providing nurturing pastoral care. Robyn and Ziggy with the support of the other hostel staff, facilitate Tribe activities, ‘Koru’ (our junior wellbeing programme), Korero (Yr 11 chat programme) the Tolcarne Council, prep and tutorials, weekend activities, our Boarding Leader Programme, yoga, baking and crafts, the 'flexi prep' creative activities, dinner swaps, our Junior Social, Tolcarne trips and year level gatherings.

Sarah is our Office Administrator and Health Centre Manager, who is the first port of call if the girls aren’t feeling well, providing motherly health care and support. The school guidance counsellor and chaplain also drop by regularly, to offer extra pastoral support and guidance for the girls.

Marcus Verberne is our Food Service Manager along with the brilliant catering team. Marcus provides nutritious, well-balanced, and of course, delicious meals. They’re happy to cater to individual dietary requirements, ensuring absolutely every student has the opportunity to eat well.

Simon Meldrum is our Property Manager, his goal is to ensure Tolcarne’s facilities and grounds are world class. He also oversees the incredible cleaning team and ensures Tolcarne as a facility, is operating smoothly on a daily basis.

Support Staff:

Alongside our House Managers, we also have our amazing support staff!

Ken Rust and Jenny Harrex are our van drivers. These two are responsibile for the daily driving of the Tolcarne van, transporting our girls from one location to the other.

Meg Huffadine, Sarah Johnstone, Anouk Tremain and Jas McIntosh are our Prep Supervisors. This group of capable individuals supervise daily prep. They are avaliable to support the girls with homework related tasks and aid in flexi prep sessions. We also have an experienced group of in house tutors. Our tutors visit weekly, offering more specilised assistance for students from Year 9, right through to NCEA levels.

'It is the people'

There is a wonderful Māori Whakatauki that is 'alive' at Tolcarne.

“He aha te mea nui o te ao
What is the most important thing in the world?
He tangata, he tangata, he tangata
It is the people, it is the people, it is the people.”
